Project description:

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly changed educational processes in the Republic of Croatia since the beginning of its spread in 2020. Uncertainty about the effects of the pandemic on education is expected to continue in 2021. In the given period, various educational measures were introduced for organizing the educational process at various educational levels. Organizational changes that the pandemic had caused affected key aspects of the educational process, primarily the setting of educational priorities, implementation of curriculum, approaches to evaluation and grading, learning environment and pupils’ support. The changes in these processes have potentially had (and will probably have in the future) tremendous consequences on the lives of pupils of different age. By employing the sequential, longitudinal mixed model research design that has a large quantitative and extensive qualitative research strand, the proposed project represents a comprehensive scientific examination of significant changes in Croatian education, which have arisen as a consequence of the pandemic. The aim is to ascertain educational and psychosocial effects of these changes on pupils, with a particular focus on the changes of their educational experiences, well-being and educational aspirations. Particular emphasis is put on examining how changes that the pandemic caused in the organization of the educational process have affected three vulnerable groups: pupils with disabilities and learning disabilities, pupils from unfavourable socioeconomic settings, and gifted pupils. The research results will be relevant not only as a retrospective insight into unique social and educational events, but will indeed serve prospectively as a source of insights and recommendations for the future. The project results will enable designing and introducing educational policy measures at the level of the system, which might mitigate the incurred disruptions of educational processes, and empower pupils, educational workers and parents for successful mastering of similar crisis situations in the future.
