os_akteriThe Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, group for the urban and rural sociology and sociology of space, organized a round table entitled:

Actors of social changes in the space. Transformation of the space and the quality of life in Croatia.

The past two decades of the transition and the social changes (deregulation of the state and the increase of private interests) left significant consequences in the space (rural and urban communities) and the overall quality of life in Croatia. Different actors (political, economical, professional and civil) influenced with their activity both the immediate environment in which they live, and the society as a whole. Many spaces have been totally devastated or modified, and left to rapid residential and commercial construction (examples of Zagreb and Split). The period of „death of urbanism“ and urban planning as a process left numerous negative consequences regarding space in Croatia. Thus, the analysis and monitoring of the changes that incurred represent a significant scientific contribution with the aim of decreasing the destruction of the space, the immediate living environment and the quality of everyday life (investment construction, quality of housing, excessive construction, threats to the public spaces, unregulated traffic, neglect of the city centers, inadequate infrastructural equipment of settlements, decrease in the number of green areas, construction of golf courses etc.).

In the work of the round table participated the experts of different profiles (sociologists, architects, economists, ethnologists, anthropologists etc.) who had their presentations and discussions, and who discussed the given topics of the round table very efficiently.

The interdisciplinary and regional approach (Croatia, Serbia, Slovenia), which has proven fruitful at the round table, confirmed that there is a strong need for the actualization of these social themes exactly in this way. The results of the round table will be published in a book (proceedings) in the edition Science and Society of the Institute for Social Research.
