New Europeanism as a Counterreaction to the EU polycrisis
Published: 28.05.2026.

A special issue of the journal “Innovation” (indexed in Q1 for Sociology and Political Science) was published recently under the title of “New Europeanism as a Counterreaction to the EU polycrisis”. The Editors of the issue are Nikola Petrović and Natasza Styczyńska.
In the last twenty years the EU was marked by various crises, and the rise of Eurosceptic forces. The research has also been focused on Euroscepticism. However, various new actors (movements, movement parties, national and transnational parties) have also emerged as a reaction to the rise of Euroscepticism and called for a fight against Euroscepticism and nationalism and for deeper European integration.
The special issue tackles this relatively neglected phenomenon and consists of 13 papers that analyse pro-European actors from various parts of the European Union, as well as some candidate countries, and also the influence of crises on attitudes towards the EU. Our researchers Josip Bilić and Anja Gvozdanović have also contributed to the special issue with their papers.
The special issue is available at the link: https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/ciej20/39/2.
The special issue was created as a result of the project “Integration and disintegration of the European Union: Dynamics of Europeanism and Euroscepticism”, financed by the Croatian Science Foundation.
