Two analytical reports authored by Boris Jokić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić are published: one on private tutoring and the other on organized preparations for the State Matura and admission exams.

The presented results are a part of the research  ‘National monitoring of effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and earthquake on the Croatian educational system’, which was initially financed by the Ministry of Science and Education, and continued to be implemented under the Croatian Science Foundation financing.

The results suggest a highly prevalent occurence of private tutoring among all generations of pupils, and an almost normative practice of attending organized preparations among final-year pupils. This has serious personal, educational, economic and social consequences.

The research was conducted in May 2021 in 161 schools on a nationally representative sample of 20,476 eight-grade pupils of primary schools, and second-grade and final-year pupils of secondary schools.

Due to its large range, and the fact that it was carried out during the COVID-19 disease pandemic and at the end of the school year, the research represents the most accurate source of data on 'shadow education' in the Republic of Croatia.
