Anđelina Svirčić Gotovac, PhD, Jelena Zlatar Gamberožić, PhD and Sara Ursić, PhD participated in the international conference “Architecture and Housing Culture in Zagreb and Central European Cities in the Period 1880–1940“. Their paper was titled “Socio-Spatial Transformation of the Zagreb City Core: Between the Market and Sustainability”. The conference was held at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Zagreb on 9 and 10 October 2025.

In their paper, the authors analysed the direction of development of urban and spatial planning in the context of socio-spatial processes in the last thirty years, through which the city of Zagreb’s centre has been intensively transformed. The processes of gentrification, touristification, and apartmanization, which have been going on with great intensity in the city’s core, affect demographic, urban and identity characteristics of this part of the city. In such a context, the processes of urban and post-earthquake renovation are carried out inadequately, which is evident in the partial renovation of the housing stock and low intensity of residents’ returning. The quality of life is declining, while the aging of the population of Donji and Gornji Grad is increasing.
