 Members of the COBRAS research team participated at the international scientific psychology meeting "24. Ramiro and Zoran Bujas Days" held from April 11th to April 13th, 2019 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. The conference was organized by the Faculty Department of Psychology and Croatian Psychological Association.
Within the symposium "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: longitudinal perspective“ several presentations were held: “Adaptation to the transition from class to subject teaching in Croatian education system: the bioecological approach” (Gordana Kuterovac Jagodić, Iris Marušić and Inja Erceg), “Dynamic nature and changes of educational aspirations of upper primary school students - longitudinal mixed research model design” (Boris Jokić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić), “Role of mothers and fathers in the education of pupils at the end of primary education: child and parent perspectives“ (Zrinka Ristić Dedić and Boris Jokić) and “Elementary school pupils’ aspirations for higher education: the role of status attainment, blocked opportunities and school context” (Josip Šabić).

 On January 11, 2019, members of the COBRAS team held two methodological workshops for the members of the scientific community. Boris Jokić and Josip Šabić held a workshop on multilevel modelling and Zrinka Ristić Dedić held a workshop on latent growth curves modelling. The workshops gathered scientists from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences in Zagreb, the Faculty of Education in Osijek, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, the Catholic University of Croatia, the Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies, the Institute of Social Sciences "Ivo Pilar" and the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb. We would like to express our gratitude to the Secondary school of Administration Zagreb for their warm hospitality.

Report on third quantitative phase of a scientific research project "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change (COBRAS)" (only in Croatian).



December 11, 2018

 The third meeting of the Educational Aspirations Network within the project "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change (COBRAS)" was held on December 10th, 2018. At the meeting, Boris Jokić presented the results from the third quantitative phase of the research. Along with the members of the COBRAS project team, the meeting gathered representatives of 5 primary schools from Zagreb involved in the qualitative part of the research and representatives of 23 primary schools from Zagreb involved in the quantitative part of the research.
We would like to express our gratitude to all school representatives for participating at the meeting, as well as Vladimir Prelog Science School for their warm hospitality.

 Boris Jokić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić have participated at the 4th conference "Better Education, Better Croatia" that was held on November 12, 2018. The conference was organized by 24 Hours. Two talks on educational aspirations of students were held: "I'm Going to Be a Policeman, a Surgeon, a Hairdresser – The Aspirations of Children and Youth and Future of Croatia as They See It" (Boris Jokić), and "When the Prom Ends: What Are the Hopes of Croatian High School Graduates?"  Members of the COBRAS research team participated at the conference "4th Days of Educational Sciences - The Educational System: a Confining and/or Stimulating Environment" that was held on October 25th – 26th, 2018. The conference was organized by the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Centre for Educational Research and Development.
Within the symposium "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change" several presentations were held: “Changes in educational aspirations of pupils in higher grades of elementary schools during transitional periods of their educational pathway” (Boris Jokić), “Sources of motivation for learning and perception of transition to secondary school of eighth-grade elementary school students” (Gordana Kuterovac Jagodić & Inja Erceg), “Educational predictors of elementary school students’ perception of personal future” (Josip Šabić), “Construction of parental role in education of children of different age” (Zrinka Ristić Dedić) and “Between woodturning and Sorbonne - educational aspirations from the perspective of parents of different socioeconomic status” (Iva Košutić).



October 2, 2018

 Members of the COBRAS project team have participated at the European Association for Research on Adolescence Conference “EARA 2018” held in Ghent, Belgium, from September 12th to September 15th 2018. The Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (Ghent University) organized the conference.
Within the symposium “Motivation and learning”, Gordana Kuterovac Jagodić presented the paper “Reasons for Learning and Perception of Transition to Secondary School among Croatian Adolescents” (Kuterovac Jagodić & Erceg). Inja Erceg presented the paper “School Related Stress among Adolescent Girls and Boys of Different School Achievement” (Erceg & Kuterovac Jagodić).



September 3, 2018

 Members of the COBRAS project team have participated at the "EARLI SIG 18 & 23 conference" held in Groningen, Netherlands from August 29th to August 31st 2018. Two papers examining the quantitative data from the COBRAS project were presented at the conference. Iva Košutić presented the paper "Inequalities and Educational Decisions: Role of Pupils’ Cultural Capital in Secondary School Choice", co-authored with Jelena Matić and Boris Jokić. Josip Šabić presented the paper "Does perceived parents' and teacher's support affect students' self-efficacy?", co-authored with Jelena Matić, Iva Košutić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić.

October 5, 2017

 The second meeting of the Educational Aspirations Network within the project "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change (COBRAS)" was held on October 4th, 2017.
Along with the members of the COBRAS project team, the meeting gathered representatives of 5 primary schools from Zagreb involved in the qualitative part of the research and representatives of 23 primary schools from Zagreb involved in the quantitative part of the research.
In the first part of the meeting, members of the COBRAS project team Gordana Kuterovac Jagodić, Iris Marušić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić presented the results from the first quantitative and the second qualitative phase of the research. In the second part of the meeting, school representatives discussed school experiences and practices related to the adaptation of students to first grade, the transition from teacher schooling to subject teacher schooling, as well as the students' aspirations for continuing education.

 During the last week, members of the COBRAS project team have participated at two international conferences in the field of developmental psychology and educational research.
Iris Marušić participated at the 17th Biennial EARLI Conference for Research on Learning and Instruction held in Tampere, Finland from August 28th to September 2nd where she presented the paper "Socio-demographic and academic predictors of educational aspirations of elementary school students", co-authored with Josip Šabić.
Zrinka Ristić Dedić and Boris Jokić participated at 18th European Conference on Developmental Psychology that took place in Utrecht, Netherlands from August 29th to September 1st. Two papers examining the data from the first two qualitative research phases of the COBRAS project were presented at the conference - "A qualitative exploration of the parental role in shaping pupils’ educational aspirations" (Ristić Dedić & Jokić) and "A Qualitative Exploration of Pupils’ Educational Aspirations in the Context of Croatian Education" (Jokić & Ristić Dedić).

 During the last week, Boris Jokić and Zrinka Ristić Dedić have participated at the 39th Annual Conference of the International School Psychology Association (Manchester, UK). Two presentations were held at the conference – "Aiming high in diverging life contexts: the qualitative exploration of differences in pupils’ educational aspirations living in differing school neighbourhoods" (Ristić Dedić & Jokić) and "Congruence of parents’ and teachers’ views of pupils’ future prospects and aspirations: the qualitative study in the context of Croatian elementary education" (Jokić & Ristić Dedić), both presenting the results of the first qualitative phase of the COBRAS project.



April 24, 2017

 Iva Košutić, member of the COBRAS research team, participated at the VI. National sociology congress organized by the Croatian Sociological Association, from 7th to 8th April, 2017. Theme of the congress was the structure and dynamics of social inequalities. Iva Košutić presented the work "Knowledge society or inheritance of knowledge? Reflection of social inequalities in the educational aspirations of the students and their parents", co-authored with Boris Jokić. She analysed the data collected on COBRAS project, examining the consistency of the educational ambitions and aspirations of the students and their parents, that is, a specific family habitus and its positioning within a wider school and social context.

 Members of the COBRAS research team participated at the international scientific psychology meeting "23. Ramiro and Zoran Bujas Days" held from April 6th to April 8th, 2017 at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb. The conference was organized by the Faculty Department of Psychology and Croatian Psychological Association.

Within the symposium "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change", there were five presentations. Boris Jokic presented the theoretical framework, as well as the methodological approach and challenges of the project. Josip Sabic outlined the population perspective on the educational aspirations of the elementary students. Zrinka Ristic Dedic, Inja Erceg and Iris Marusic talked about first empirical results obtained by interviews with students, parents and teachers, respectively.

 The First Meeting of the Educational Aspirations Network

The first meeting of the Educational Aspirations Network (EAN) within the project “Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change (COBRAS)” was held on January 30th, 2017 at the premises of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb.

Along with the members of the COBRAS project team, the meeting gathered representatives of five primary schools from Zagreb involved in the qualitative part of the research: principals, expert staff and teachers from the Primary School August Harambašić, Primary School Fran Krsto Frankopan, Primary School Horvati, Primary School Izidor Kršnjavi and Primary School Jure Kaštelan. Dr. Boris Jokic, the project leader, presented the accomplishments on the project and opened the discussion and the exchange of experiences about the project.



January 22, 2017

A report called "What are the learning habits, homework writing / copying patterns, and perception of meritocracy? A population perspective: Krapinsko-zagorska, Međimurska, Varaždinska and Zagreb county" was released today. In this report, results of the project "On learning 2015/2016" are presented. This project was carried out by the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb and county councils of primary school pedagogues from Zagrebačka, Međimurska, Krapinsko-zagorska and Varaždinska county from November 2015 to February 2016.

A report called "What are the educational aspirations of pupils and their parents? A population perspective: Krapinsko-zagorska, Međimurska, Varaždinska and Zagreb county" was released today. In this report, results of the project "On learning 2015/2016" are presented. This project was carried out by the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb and county councils of primary school pedagogues from Krapinsko-zagorska, Međimurska, Varaždinska and Zagreb county.

 Members of the COBRAS research team participated at the conference "3rd Days of Educational Sciences - Educational change: challenges and expectations" that was held on October 20th – 21st, 2016. The conference was organized by the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb, Centre for Educational Research and Development.

The presentations focused on the educational aspirations of the eighth graders. Zrinka Ristić Dedić and Boris Jokić held the presentation "In the future, I would like to go to university: some determinants of students’ educational aspirations" and Iris Marušić and Josip Šabić held the presentation "To enrol into grammar school or vocational school? The role of socio-demographic characteristics and academic self-concept in secondary school choice".

 From 26th to 30th of September, 2016, the project team members, Boris Jokic, Zrinka Ristic Dedic, Josip Sabic and Jelena Matic, participated at the methodological workshop entitled "Structural Equation Modelling with Mplus", organized by the Psychometrics Centre, University of Cambridge, UK. Among other topics, the workshop covered the topic of multilevel modelling that is intended to be used in the analysis of the project quantitative data.



September 26, 2016

 Two members of the research team, Jelena Matic and Josip Sabic, participated at the inaugural meeting of the network "Youth poverty, education & employment research network" that was held on September 21st - 23rd, 2016 at the Faculty of Law, University of Zagreb.

At this three-day event, along with the presentation of the project "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change", several other interesting presentations of colleagues from Great Britain, Austria, Hungary, Slovenia, Serbia and Croatia were held and the possibilities for future cooperation were discussed.

 The first public presentation of the Croatian Science Foundation installation project entitled "Educational aspirations of pupils at transitional periods of Croatian elementary education: nature, determinants and change (COBRAS)" was held on April 8, 2016 in the premises of the Institute for Social Research in Zagreb.

The project was presented by Dr Boris Jokic (project principal investigator). Along with Dr. Jokic, two members of the project team, Dr Zrinka Ristic Dedic and Jelena Matic, answered to the numerous questions of the interested audience.
